The Dolphin Premier cleans the floor, walls and waterline of inground pools up to 50 feet long, and its filters are what set it apart. You can fit a large bottom-load bag for leafy weeks or cartridges for fine dirt, and a weekly timer runs its three-hour cycles. Dolphin gives it a 3-year warranty.

Who It's For

The Premier suits an inground pool of up to 50 feet that fills with leaves in the fall and collects fine silt or pollen for the rest of the year. You want one robot for both jobs, including the waterline, and you are happy with a weekly timer rather than an app. Turning the robot over to empty it does not put you off.

Look Elsewhere If

You may want a different robot if your pool is above ground, because Dolphin lists the Premier for inground pools only. It has no app and no remote, so if you like to control the robot from your phone, the Sigma is the closer fit. And if you would rather lift a basket out of the top than turn a wet robot over, a top-loading model may be easier to live with.

Where To Buy

Key Features

Filter Bag And Cartridges. Dolphin's multi-layer system takes either a bottom-load filter bag or cartridges, and a fine filter kit comes in the box. The bag suits the weeks when leaves and twigs pile up, and the cartridges make more sense when the water carries dust or pollen. Ultra-fine panels are sold separately. Dolphin does not give a micron figure for any of these filters, so the choice comes down to the kind of debris you see most often.

Weekly Timer And Cycle Length. A default cycle runs for 3 hours, an hour longer than the Dolphin Quantum's, and the built-in weekly timer repeats it every day, every other day or every third day. There is no app, no remote and no delayed start, so you set the schedule by hand rather than from a phone. The timer sits on the power supply, where a button picks the schedule and three lights show which one is set. The schedule lasts one week, though, so you set it again at the start of each week.

Waterline And Suction. The Premier climbs the walls and cleans the waterline, which is where a ring of oil and grime often forms. It uses two combined brushes, which Dolphin does not list as active, so they are not powered on their own. Suction is rated at 4,500 gallons per hour. An anti-tangle swivel keeps the cable from twisting as the robot turns.

Emptying The Filter. This part takes a little more effort. The filter comes out from underneath, so you turn the 20.3-pound robot over to reach it. A full-filter indicator tells you when it is time, so you do not have to guess. It is a red light on the power supply, which blinks when the filter is partly blocked and stays on when it needs emptying. Even so, it is less work than netting leaves out of the pool by hand.

Pool Size And Shape. Dolphin rates the Premier for inground pools up to 50 feet long and names rectangular, round, free-form and kidney shapes. It is not cleared for above-ground pools.

How It Compares

Dolphin Quantum Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Quantum is the top-loading alternative, also in our Pro tier. It has active brushes and a 2-hour cycle, weighs 18.3 pounds, and is listed for above-ground pools as well as inground ones. You give up the leaf bag and an hour of cycle time, but emptying it never means turning the robot over.

Dolphin Sigma Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Sigma is closer to the Premier in what it cleans, and it adds Wi-Fi scheduling through Dolphin's app. It runs a 2.5-hour cycle, empties through an extra-large basket at the top, and weighs 24.6 pounds. It carries the same 3-year warranty. Pick it if you would rather plan cycles from your phone than at the pool.

Dolphin Explorer E50 Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Explorer E50 pairs app control with a top-loading filter and the same 50-foot rating, and it is listed for above-ground pools too. It weighs 19.3 pounds and comes with a 60-foot cable. You trade the bottom-load bag for easier emptying and phone control.

Worth Knowing

The Amazon listing says ultra-fine filters come with the Premier, while Dolphin's US page lists only a fine filter kit in the box, so check what your seller includes. The US spec sheet gives no cable length. No caddy is included either. Dolphin sells one separately, and it may be worth having for a robot you will turn over often. Dolphin's quick start guide also suggests letting out only as much floating cable as the robot needs to reach the whole pool, and keeping the rest rolled up outside it.

Care And Maintenance

From the Dolphin manual:

  1. Unplug the power supply before any servicing, and never use the cable to lift the robot out of the water.
  2. Wash the filter bag or cartridge after every cycle. Turn the robot upside down, open the bottom lid and pull the filter out.
  3. Press RESET on the power supply while the robot is working if the filter light stays on after you have cleaned the filter.
  4. Now and then, take off the impeller cover and clean around the impeller housing, with the power supply unplugged.
  5. For storage, coil the cable and keep the robot in a cool, dry, shady place, on its caddy or upside down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the Premier in an above-ground pool?

No. Dolphin rates it for inground pools only, in rectangular, round, free-form and kidney shapes up to 50 feet long.

Does it clean the waterline?

Yes. Dolphin lists the floor, walls and waterline, and waterline scrubbing appears on its US spec sheet.

How long is a cleaning cycle?

Three hours by default. The weekly timer repeats that cycle every day, every other day or every third day, for one week at a time.

Can I schedule it from an app?

No. The Premier has a built-in weekly timer instead, and there is no app or remote control.

How do I empty it?

You turn the robot over and take the filter out from underneath. A full-filter indicator shows when it needs emptying.

How long is the warranty?

Three years, according to Dolphin's US store page.

Does it work in a saltwater pool?

Dolphin's US page lists no water-type limits, so check the manual that comes with the robot for the salt level it allows before you run it in a salt pool.
