The Dolphin Sigma is out of stock on Amazon US, so it is not in our tables for now. We check it again each month. For a robot you can buy today, see How It Compares below.

The Dolphin Sigma brings app scheduling to a robot that cleans the floor, walls and waterline of inground pools up to 50 feet long. It has an extra-large basket that lifts out through the top, an ultra-fine filter in the box and a 3-year warranty. The trade-off is weight, at 24.6 pounds.

Who It's For

The Sigma suits an owner who already likes to manage things from a phone and wants the pool to fit into that routine. Your inground pool is no longer than 50 feet, perhaps free-form or kidney-shaped, and you want the waterline cleaned along with the floor and walls. You will accept a heavier robot in return for a large basket and a long warranty.

Look Elsewhere If

You may want a different robot if you lift the robot out often and would like something lighter, because the Sigma weighs 24.6 pounds. It is rated for inground pools only, so above-ground owners should look at the Quantum or the Explorer E50, which cover both. And if you would rather have powered brushes than an app, the Quantum is the closer fit.

Key Features

App Scheduling. Wi-Fi and the MyDolphin Plus app let you schedule cycles from your phone, with a weekly timer behind them. There is no delayed start and no handheld remote, so the phone is the control panel. For an owner who wants the pool cleaned on a steady rhythm without having to think about it, this is the main reason to choose the Sigma.

Navigation And Pool Shapes. The Amazon listing names gyroscope navigation, which means the Sigma follows a planned pattern rather than turning at random. Maytronics does not describe the system further. If your pool has curves, it helps that Dolphin lists free-form and kidney shapes among the pools the Sigma handles.

Basket And Filters. The extra-large multi-layer basket comes with an ultra-fine filter kit, and both lift out through the top, so you never turn the robot over to empty it. That matters more on a robot of this weight than on most. Dolphin gives no micron figure for either filter, and there is no full-filter indicator, so a quick look after each cycle is a sensible routine.

Brushes And Suction. Its two combined brushes are not listed as active, which means they are not powered on their own. Dolphin rates its suction at 4,500 gallons per hour. Tracks carry the robot up the walls, and the cable has an anti-tangle swivel that keeps it from twisting. A full cycle runs for up to 2.5 hours.

Warranty And Weight. Dolphin backs the Sigma for 3 years in the US, three times the term on the Nautilus CC Plus and a year longer than the Quantum's. The weight is the other side of the picture. At 24.6 pounds, the Sigma is a real lift out of the water, and a caddy, which Dolphin sells separately, could make the trip to storage easier.

How It Compares

Dolphin Proteus DX4 Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Proteus DX4 drops app scheduling for onboard scheduling, adds active brushes, and supports above-ground pools too. It is lighter, at 18.5 pounds, and runs a shorter 2-hour cycle. Both clean the floor, walls and waterline. Choose it if the brushes matter more to you than your phone, or if your pool is above ground.

Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus keeps the app one tier down, in Premium, but cleans only the floor and walls and is rated for pools up to 40 feet. At 20.8 pounds it is lighter to lift, and its warranty is 1 year. It suits a shorter pool where the waterline stays clean with an occasional brush.

Dolphin Explorer E50 Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Explorer E50 also pairs the app with waterline cleaning and a 50-foot rating, and it adds powered brushes and above-ground compatibility at 19.3 pounds. It comes with a 60-foot cable. It is the one to compare most closely if you like the Sigma's app but not its weight.

Worth Knowing

What the Sigma offers that the Nautilus CC Plus and the Quantum do not is the pairing of app control with waterline cleaning and a 3-year warranty. Dolphin's US page gives no cable length, though. The care steps below come from Dolphin's quick start guide for the Sigma, which points to the full manual on the Maytronics website. The gyroscope detail comes from the Amazon listing rather than Dolphin's own page. Dolphin's quick start guide also asks for the power supply to stand in a shaded, well-ventilated spot, away from the pool edge and out of the wet.

Care And Maintenance

From the Dolphin manual:

  1. Unplug the power supply before any servicing, and never take the robot out of the water by its cable.
  2. Before a run, adjust the robot's handle and lock it at a diagonal, as the guide recommends.
  3. Wash the filters after every cycle, since clogged filters make the robot cover and clean the pool less well.
  4. Let out only as much floating cable as the robot needs and leave the rest coiled outside the pool. Straighten any kinks by stretching the cable out in the sun for at least a day.
  5. For storage, coil the cable and keep the robot in a cool, dry, shaded place, away from direct sun, heat and frost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sigma have Wi-Fi?

Yes. It connects to the MyDolphin Plus app over Wi-Fi, which handles scheduling and control.

Can it clean an above-ground pool?

No. Dolphin rates the Sigma for inground pools only. The Quantum and the Explorer E50 cover above-ground pools as well.

Does it reach the waterline?

Yes. It cleans the floor, walls and waterline, and waterline cleaning appears on Dolphin's spec sheet.

How heavy is the Sigma?

It weighs 24.6 pounds, so a caddy helps when you move it between the pool and storage. Dolphin sells one separately.

How long does one cycle take?

Up to 2.5 hours. You schedule cycles in the app, and the weekly timer repeats them.

Which filters are included?

The extra-large multi-layer basket and an ultra-fine filter kit. Both load from the top, so the robot never needs turning over.

What warranty comes with it?

Three years in the US, according to Dolphin's spec table.

How does it find its way around?

By gyroscope, according to its Amazon listing, which means a planned path rather than random turns. Maytronics does not describe the system further.
