The Polaris 8050 Sport scrubs the floor, walls and waterline with powered brushes and tracked movement. Polaris's product page also describes adjustable surface settings for wall climbing and a transparent window over the filter canister. Those details let you adjust its climbing behavior and see collected debris before opening the cleaner.
Who It's For
The 8050 Sport suits an inground pool where you want brushing across the floor and up to the waterline. It serves pools up to 40 feet long. It supports vinyl, gunite, fiberglass and tile surfaces, so its compatibility covers several common pool finishes. You are happy to start each cycle yourself when you put the cleaner in the pool. The filter canister is reached from the top of the cleaner after a run.
Look Elsewhere If
You may want a different robot if you want to remove power cables from the pool or have cleaning begin automatically while you are away. The 8050 Sport stays connected to a power supply during use, and it has neither scheduling nor phone controls. It also does not suit soft pool walls. Polaris's product page says it has no tangle-reducing swivel, so someone who specifically wants that cable feature will need another cleaner.
Where To Buy
Key Features
Brushes And Cleaning Coverage. The 8050 Sport has active brushes that scrub as it moves across the pool surface. Polaris's product page describes brushes at the front and rear. Tracks carry the body along the floor and up the walls, and cleaning extends to the waterline. That coverage could be useful if dirt collects along the band where the wall meets the water. The corded power supply also lets you start another cleaning run without waiting for a battery to recharge. Its cable measures 50 feet.
Navigation And Slopes. Smart mapping guides the robot along a patterned path through the pool. It supports rectangular, round and freeform layouts, including pools where the floor slopes toward a deeper end. The supported floor incline is up to 15 degrees.
Surface Settings. The Surface Control System lets you adjust the cleaner for a rough or smooth pool surface by pressing a button. You select the setting that matches your finish, and the cleaner adapts its wall-climbing behavior. Polaris also describes starting a cleaning cycle with a button press.
Canister And Suction. The filter comes out through the top, and a transparent window lets you see the debris inside before opening the cover. Polaris's product page says cyclonic action keeps debris suspended inside the canister to maintain suction during cleaning. There is no dirty-canister indicator, so you check the window to judge whether the container looks full. The removable container is Polaris's Push'N'Go filter canister. You empty it with a shake and a spray of water, so leaves can be rinsed out without handling them directly.
Intake And Debris. An oversized intake collects larger debris such as leaves and twigs. Fine and medium debris are also within the robot's cleaning scope. If your pool collects both fallen leaves and smaller settled dirt, the cleaner can handle those different debris sizes during a run. You can choose floor-only cleaning for material that has settled on the bottom, or include the walls in the run.

How It Compares
Polaris F9450 Sport Check Price on Amazon
Polaris F9450 Sport adds onboard scheduling and extends the pool-length rating to 50 feet, so choose it if you want repeat cleans to start automatically or have a longer pool. It is also lighter at 16 pounds and has a 60-foot cable, so it is the easier one to lift and offers more cable reach around the pool.
Poolmate Hydro 4 Corded Check Price on Amazon
Poolmate Hydro 4 Corded also adds onboard scheduling, so it suits someone who wants automatic starts while keeping a corded cleaner and would prefer a lighter body to lift out. It weighs 14.3 pounds and is rated for 1,614 square feet, so choose it over the Polaris if you want less weight to lift out after each run and your pool fits that area rating.
Poolmate Hydro 4 SE Check Price on Amazon
Poolmate Hydro 4 SE adds app scheduling, so it is the closer fit if you want to manage repeat cleaning from your phone instead of walking back to the pool equipment to start a run. Its cable is shorter at 40 feet, so choose it when phone control is useful and that reach suits the distance between your power supply and the pool.
Worth Knowing
Polaris says on its product page that a transport caddy is included. The robot weighs 20 pounds, so rolling it could help if you would otherwise carry it across a patio or yard. You still have to lift it out of the water and onto the caddy.
For microscopic debris, the robot needs an ultra-fine filter. Its ability to collect larger leaves and twigs does not mean the same filtration will capture the smallest particles you want removed from the pool.
Care And Maintenance
From the Polaris manual:
- Unplug power to the cleaner at the control unit. Lift by the handle, never the floating cable, and let it drain.
- After each cycle, unplug the control unit from the power source. Press Push'N'Go to release the canister handle. Lift the canister out by its handle, press the latches to remove the lid, and rinse both with a hose. Replace the lid and canister.
- Occasionally wash the mesh with mild soap and rinse thoroughly.
- Untangle the cable outward from the cleaner. Store on its caddy away from sunlight and bad weather.
- Remove the cleaner before super chlorinating or adding acid.
Frequently Asked Questions
How large a pool can it clean?
Up to 40 feet long. Its 50-foot cable also has to reach from the power supply to the robot as it travels across the pool.
Is a caddy included?
Yes. Polaris's product page says a transport caddy comes with the cleaner. You can use it to move the robot between the pool and storage after lifting it out of the water.
Can it work in saltwater?
Yes. Saltwater and chlorine pools are supported. Its water-treatment compatibility also includes mineral water and pools that use ozone or UV systems.
Can I choose a floor-only clean?
Yes. Polaris's product page describes floor-only and floor-and-wall modes. You can select the floor option when settled debris on the bottom is the area you want cleaned.
How do I empty the filter?
Remove the canister, shake it and spray away the debris, according to Polaris. The Push'N'Go canister is designed to release collected material without handling the debris directly.
Will it work in a freeform pool?
Yes. Freeform, rectangular and round layouts are supported. It follows a patterned cleaning path through these layouts.
Can it clean a tile pool?
Yes. Tile is a supported surface for the powered brushes and tracked movement.
Does it scrub the waterline?
Yes. Waterline cleaning is part of its coverage, along with the floor and walls. The active brushes scrub as the tracked body moves over the pool surface.
