The Dolphin Cayman scrubs the floor and walls of inground and above-ground pools with a powered brush and runs on an onboard weekly schedule. Its corded design suits repeated cleaning, while the top-access basket and 14.6-pound body help with routine handling after a clean. The basket accepts optional panels for finer debris.

Who It's For

The Cayman suits an inground or above-ground pool where you want regular floor and wall cleaning without starting every run yourself. Your pool can be rectangular, round or freeform, with surfaces such as vinyl, fiberglass, gunite, tile or pebble. You have a suitable outlet near the pool and prefer to set the cleaning schedule at the power supply. At 14.6 pounds, it is light to lift out.

Look Elsewhere If

You may want a different robot if you want the waterline scrubbed, because the Cayman leaves that band at the surface for manual cleaning. Phone control is another reason to look elsewhere, since it has no app. Dolphin's specification table also says there is no delayed start, so a countdown before a clean is not an option. If you would rather have no cable in the pool, a cordless model suits you better.

Where To Buy

Key Features

Active Brush And Suction. Dolphin marks the Cayman's brush as active, so it is powered as the cleaner travels across the pool surface. Premier Robotic, a Dolphin dealer, says the brush dislodges stuck algae, leaves and twigs for collection in the basket. Suction is rated at 4,000 gph. This is useful when debris sticks to the pool surface.

Mapping And Traction. Advanced mapping guides the Cayman around the pool, and tracks carry it across the floor and up the walls. Premier Robotic calls the traction system HyperGrip and describes it as working with the motors for wall climbing. The Cayman supports inclines up to 15 degrees, so it can also handle a sloped floor within that limit.

Weekly Scheduling. Each cleaning cycle lasts 2 hours, and the weekly timer lets you arrange repeat cleans at the power supply. Premier Robotic describes daily and alternate-day settings. Because the Cayman draws power from an outlet, the timer can start another cycle without a battery recharge between runs. That suits a pool where dirt needs removing regularly throughout the week.

Basket And Filter Options. The filter lifts out through the top, so you can reach it with the robot upright. The manual says the basket handle rises on its own when you open the cover, so you can lift the basket straight out. Premier Robotic says the MaxBin comes with fine filter panels and accepts optional NanoFilter panels that snap into the same basket for sand, silt and algae.

Cable And Handling. A 50-foot cable connects the Cayman to its power supply. For setup, the manual says to position that supply approximately midway along the pool's long side and to keep the floating cable clear of obstructions. The robot has a carry handle for removal. For extended storage, the manual says to drain it fully and put the cleaned filters back in place. The manual links partial coverage to power-supply placement or insufficient slack in the floating cable.

How It Compares

Dolphin Advantage Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Advantage has the same active brush and floor-and-wall cleaning in the Premium tier, with advanced mapping and a top-access filter, and weighs 14.8 pounds. It is the one to look at if you want those basics from a lower tier, since the Cayman is in the Pro tier and both have a 50-foot cable and a cycle of 2 hours.

Dolphin Explorer E50 Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Explorer E50 adds waterline cleaning and app scheduling, and its pool-length rating reaches 50 feet, so it suits an owner who wants the surface edge cleaned or a larger pool covered. It weighs 19.3 pounds and has a 60-foot cable, so choose it if you need the extra reach and phone control enough to accept a heavier robot to lift out after each clean.

Dolphin Proteus DX4 Check Price on Amazon

Dolphin Proteus DX4 keeps onboard scheduling and a cycle of 2 hours while adding waterline cleaning, which suits someone who likes the Cayman's control style but wants the band at the surface included. Its longer cable serves a larger pool, and its 18.5-pound body makes it a better fit when the additional cleaning area matters more than a lighter lift.

Worth Knowing

Dolphin's specification table says the cable has no anti-tangle swivel. The manual tells you to unwind it fully before starting, with enough slack for the cleaner to reach the whole pool. It also says to use the original power supply, keep it out of standing water and connect it to an outlet protected by a ground fault interrupter. Do not swim while the Cayman is working. Dolphin gives the robot a 2-year warranty. Dolphin also says there is no full-filter indicator, so you check the basket yourself.

Care And Maintenance

From the Dolphin manual:

  1. Switch off and unplug the power supply before you lift the cleaner out or open it for cleaning.
  2. Lift the cleaner out by its handle, never by the cable, and let it drain at the edge. Hose the filter basket clean before the debris dries.
  3. At least once a month, remove and hose any ultra-fine panels. Refit them and close the filter cover.
  4. Clear any debris caught in the impeller.
  5. Before off-season storage, drain the cleaner, clean and refit the basket and panels, and roll up the cable without kinks. Keep it out of direct sun, rain and frost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work independently of my pool pump?

Yes. Premier Robotic says the Cayman works independently of your pool pump and plugs into a standard outlet. Its supplied power supply runs the cleaner through the floating cable.

How long does a cleaning cycle take?

2 hours. The manual says it stops when the cycle ends, and you start it by switching on the power supply.

Does it clean the walls?

Yes. The Cayman brushes the floor and walls with track-based traction. Its surface compatibility includes vinyl, gunite, fiberglass, tile and pebble.

Can it work in saltwater?

Yes. The Cayman supports saltwater and chlorine pools. Its compatibility also extends to mineral water and pools treated with ozone or UV.

How do I clean the filter?

Open the top cover and lift out the basket. The manual says to release the bottom latch, empty the debris and rinse the basket with a hose before the basket dries out after use.

How much does it weigh?

14.6 pounds. For removal, the manual says to bring it to the edge with the floating cable, then lift it by the handle and let the water drain.

Does it need assembly before use?

No. Premier Robotic says assembly is unnecessary. You only connect the cable to the power supply. Its package includes the robot, cable, timer power supply and MaxBin basket.
